Texts from Boys

The next day, I was tired, since I had gotten so little sleep the night before, but at the same time I was excited and raring to go and I couldn’t wait to get to the fields to get the day’s games underway. Weekend tournaments were a lot different than Summer League and on Sundays during weekend tournaments, you only got to keep playing until you lost a game, and once you did, you were done and your tournament was over. But if you somehow managed to win all of your games, you got a shiny trophy and a championship T-shirt. But I wasn’t excited about a shiny trophy and a championship T-shirt. I was excited about Steven. I couldn’t wait to see him again and when I did, I was going to go out of my way to impress him.

During warmups, the other girls couldn’t help but tease me a little.

“So,” Erin said. “Any word from your beau yet?”

The other girls laughed the minute she said the word ‘beau.’

“Not yet.”

“The rest of us have already placed bets. We’re all betting on when he’s going to text you for the first time. I’ve got five bucks on the first inning.”

I laughed. I could hardly believe what I had just heard. The girls were making bets on when Steven was going to text me? That was hilarious.

But then something occurred to me.

“He already said he was coming. Why would he text me?”

“That’s what boys do. They text you. Especially when they like you. And he clearly does. I was watching him last night while he was talking to you and I could see it in his eyes.”

“What do you mean?”

“His eyes sparkled every time he looked at you. Surely you could feel it.”

“What do you mean?”

“When he looked at you, into your eyes, how did you feel?”

“Like I was going to melt.”

“Exactly. The two of you have amazing chemistry, especially for a couple who just met.”

At that, Danielle, who was listening to our conversation but hadn’t said anything yet, couldn’t help but chime in.

“If you look up the word chemistry in a dictionary you’ll see a photo of Melody and Steven right next to it.”

Everyone laughed. Including me.

“You wait and see,” Erin said. “He’s going to text you this morning. It’s just a matter of when.”

“What will he say?”

“Hard to say. Probably nothing important, but that’s irrelevant. The only thing that matters is that he did. And if he does it during the first inning, it’ll be perfect because then I’ll win the bet.”

Warmups continued from there, and at that point I was even more excited than before, which was hard to believe since I was already so excited I could barely control myself. Having Steven come to a game was still my main focus, but I really liked the idea of him texting me, too, so as soon as we finished our warmups I darted to the dugout, dug my phone out of my softball bag where I normally kept it, and checked it.
